For my fourth week, I got to watch the video 'How The Worst Moments In Our Lives Make Us Who We Are' by Andrew Solomon. He talks about how from a very young age he faced many negative things that impacted his life but was amazed by how people could find a way to draw strength even when the worst was happening to him. He tells many stories about hardships in his life, from when he was in elementary school and the kids would call him names, to in high school when he got made fun of for not sitting with the girls in the lunchroom. Solomon goes on to say that even though he was gay, and got treated unfairly, he still tried to be positive and have a good outlook on things early in his life.
Solomon says that even though he grew up as a homosexual, he never gave women a bad reputation. Through his profession and many interviews he learned that women also like him, had to go through many tough trials. He tells a story of a woman he had the pleasure of interviewing who unfortunately got raped in her teens. She says that even though she got raped she felt bad for the rapist, because he would never get to meet his wonderful children or grandchildren. And from that moment on, Solomon said his view on some of the worst things in his life changed.
I think this Ted Talk was important because it showed me that even if something bad happens in my life there can always be a better side to what happened. I, like many of my classmates are dealing or have dealt with horrible things that happen to them on a day to day basis or at any given time. I feel like Solomon that if you look at things positively, even the most negative things, you will be a better happier person and you're life will be a lot more easier then dwelling and contemplating the sadness you face. I strongly suggest you should take the time out of your day to hear Andrew Solomon's story and to think about how you will face things currently and in the future.
